Get Ready for A Slice of Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie

android 5.0 key lime pieWith the next version of Android expected within the next few months, here is a little inside information about what to expect.

Originally, Android Key Lime Pie was anticipated as being the Google I/O focal point, which ended up not happening. Then rumors circulated that Android Jelly Bean 4.3 would be the next in line on the Google platform instead of Key Lime Pie. There were even screenshots and ROMS depicting handsets using 4.3 firmware to further fuel the rumors. However, what appears to be happening is that the Jelly Bean 4.3 will be launched in July 2013, with the Key Lime Pie version expected later in this year, or perhaps not even until the first quarter of 2014.

In keeping with the previous schedules of Android launch dates, and with the fact that Android will soon be celebrating their sixth birthday, many still anticipate the release of Android 5.0, Key Lime Pie, to still make an appearance in the fourth quarter of this year.

What Exactly Is Key Lime Pie For Android?

Key Lime Pie is not only the name of a delicious dessert, but also the codename for the next flagship version of Android. Jelly Bean made its appearance on devices last year , with the 4.3 version expected to be the last update until the release of version 5.0.

What To Expect From Key Lime Pie?

Google has not yet officially made an announcement as to what features will be available with Key Lime Pie, so most information up to this point is largely based upon rumors and speculation. One such rumor is that Android 5.0 will streamline the experience for the user by introducing profiles that allow the user to prevent unnecessary operations from being performed by the phone at certain times, such as during sleeping hours. Obviously, this is not a new concept since it’s been done by third party applications, but this would be the first time it would be included with the Android OS. This would alleviate one of the common Android problems of the continuous gathering of data that depletes battery life.

Kinvey, an app developer, has released a visual timeline infographic that highlights the features of previous Android versions, which gives us a few ideas as to what to expect from Android 5.0. From the information included on this timeline about developing Android apps, we might expect such features across-device SMS, built-in video chat, performance profiles, and integrated social networking.

More Rumored Possibilities

androidThere are many smartphone OS to choose from, making it necessary that Key Lime Pie come up with some unique features that will appeal to consumers. One such rumored feature is that of being able to try out games and apps demos on the Google Play market before committing to a download. This is similar to the Ouya console project which makes developers offer games with a free to play version, sometimes being a short demo version.

Currently, Android users have the option of receiving a refund for a download within 15 fifteen minutes of downloading, however, this can present problems because some files take longer to download. There can also be issues with incompatibility that are only realized after the 15 minute time period. This is why having the try before you buy option would be a bonus.

Other talk speculates about the opportunity 5.0 presents to suppress UI skins made by other manufacturers, although this is unlikely. Other rumored features that have been mentioned include an improved home screen, lock screen customization, and better integration with social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Many users have expressed the desire to have ability to get rid of all the unwanted and unnecessary apps that come already installed on their smartphones, and keep only the best Android apps. However, such pre-installed apps are what help certain Android handsets differentiate themselves from each other. It is likely that Google will take the approach of focusing on “stock” type software with multiple features, still enabling manufacturers to do other things.

When Will Android 5.0 Make Its Appearance?

Key Lime Pie was not released with the latest Google I/O of 2013, suggesting that 4.3 will remain the latest update. It is anticipated that Android 5.0 will debut later in this year.

Where Will I Find Key Lime Pie?

Since Google owns Motorola and there has been talk of a Motorola X device, there is a likelihood that this would be the first device on which Key Lime Pie appears. Google also has a pattern of releasing its Nexus products toward the end of the year, so this would make sense. It is also thought that current Google products such as the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 will get the Key Lime Pie update, as well as the Google versions of the HTC One, and Samsung Galaxy S4. It is also probably that Google will launch some new hardware alongside Android Key Lime Pie, which could possibly be a new Nexus 7 or Nexus 5, in the fourth quarter of 2013.
